Our second 2023 release welcomes duo Bate1 Produçoes, bringing with them a sound cultured in the Miratejo municipality south of Lisbon. Formed in 2018 between producers DJ Doraemon and Lokowat, Bate1 Prod are passionate about the sounds which melt across Portugal’s barrios and suburbs. “Longa Espera” is precisely that - a long-awaited flush of batida, ghetto-tarraxo and kuduro rhythms at the heart of a young and frenetic electronic scene.

Growing up in the outskirts of the city, both creatives were inspired to start experimenting with music production software and mix together their own digital beats, usually on Fruity Loops, with references to foundational Afrodiasporic influences. But the busy, elastic rhythms in “Longa Espera” are unmistakably their own style. Lasting between 2 and 3 minutes, each track of the EP is a gritty, defiant and ever-evolving cut - as addictive as it is danceable.

Instantly capturing, Mau (Always) breaks through with a new spin on the classic terraxo beat. At 140bpm, the percussion cradles old kuduro samples that speed up to engross dancers.

Second on the EP, Wind loosens the beat but not the energy. Oscillating key-strings and a pan-flute melody set the canvas for the perfect shape-shifting club track.

Lambreta (Scooter) is a digital beast, with abrupt synth lines and crunchy drum patterns. An unassimilated wobbler.

Copo (Glass) plays with spatial elements - Angolan vocal chops fill up the downbeat, creating a step-like, energetic dance.

Corrimao’s (Handrail) melancholic guitar melody draws the EP to its close, but takes no prisoners on its way out - with its triumphant kuduro finish a perfectly executed fusion.
